Business Context

Mathematics remains one of the highest failure-rate subjects in Nigerian national examinations. Millions of students lack access to qualified mathematics tutors, particularly outside Lagos and Abuja. Goddan School of Mathematics set out to democratize access to quality mathematics instruction through an affordable, accessible online platform that mirrors the structure of a private coaching centre without the geographic and financial barriers.

The Problem

The client needed a learning management system tailored to the Nigerian curriculum — not a generic international LMS. Existing platforms like Coursera or Udemy lacked Nigeria-specific exam preparation content and the cultural context necessary to engage Nigerian students effectively. They needed a platform that felt native to the Nigerian educational experience while delivering world-class content structure.

Approach

I designed a learning architecture around the Nigerian secondary curriculum, structuring content by JSS and SSS levels, then by specific exam preparation tracks. The platform needed to work reliably on low-bandwidth connections, a critical accessibility consideration for Nigerian students. I implemented progressive content loading and optimized video delivery via YouTube embedding to leverage CDN infrastructure for students with limited data.

Technical Architecture

Built with PHP and JavaScript on a MySQL database with a custom learning management layer. WooCommerce-equivalent subscription logic handles course enrolment and payment via Paystack for Nigerian card and bank transfer support. YouTube API powers video lesson delivery. A custom progress tracking dashboard records student completion across modules. Optimized for mobile-first access given Nigeria mobile-dominant internet usage.

  • Implemented Paystack as the payment processor, the only reliable option for Nigerian naira transactions
  • Designed a learning UX that felt familiar and encouraging to secondary school students

Outcome & Impact

Goddan School of Mathematics now operates as a functioning online mathematics coaching institution, enrolling students from across Nigeria. The platform provides curriculum-aligned instruction that helps students prepare for national examinations, with the goal of improving pass rates in one of Nigeria most challenging academic subjects.

Lessons Learned

EdTech for emerging markets demands infrastructure assumptions that are the opposite of those made for Western platforms. Reliable internet, modern devices, and large data allowances cannot be taken for granted. I learned to design for the constraint first and enhance progressively. More importantly, I learned that aligning software to a specific national curriculum requires real domain research: getting exam board specifications wrong would undermine student trust immediately.
